Derek Sivers tells a story where he used to bike to work. Every time he went he would cycle as hard as he could. Huffing and puffing, thighs burning. When he reached his destination his time was always within seconds from his last ride.
One day he decided to just take it easy. He looked around. He heard the birds chirping, saw people playing along the beach. He felt the sun on his skin, the wind blowing on his face. He got to the office feeling good and he looked at his watch.
To his surprise he was only 2 minutes later than normal.
He thought about that 2 minutes a lot. About the amount of pain he had put himself through, about everything he was missing along the way. He’s never looked back ever since.
