Well maybe there’s a better way.
Sure money can be “flowing in” but what’s the good in that if you can’t even take time for yourself. And please don’t tell me you’re going to wait to retire. You can do better than that.
“I don’t have time to exercise” or “I can’t take a vacation”.
These are things I hear all the time from high achievers.
I help business people improve their quality of life but sometimes their business gets in the way. Seen as I’m a serial entrepreneur myself I understand their problems well. I’ve usually had the same issues at one point or have helped someone in their situation.
If you’re in this situation, the problem is most likely that the business is still dependent on you. I could give you tips on how to gain energy or even show you a 4 minute exercise circuit for your busy schedule. But working on your business would provide the best results.
I don’t know about you but I became an entrepreneur because I wanted freedom. Freedom to do what I want, when I want. But things tend to eat up your time if you let it. For example:
This guy came to me for help. He owns a retail store and was telling me that after 15 years of getting up at 5:30am everyday he’s getting tired. He’s also developing digestive issues from the stress, poor eating and lack of sleep.
When I asked him why he hasn’t found someone to replace him yet, he said that a big part of why the customers chooses to do business with him is …well, to see him.
He said it was because he gives them the best service, he jokes with them and over the years has built up a good reputation. Which I don’t doubt at all. But now it’s affecting his health and not only that but from what I see his business growth.
Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.
Edward Stanley, Earl of Derby
What if he hired someone with his personality and sense of humour, trained them to answer any question the same way he does. Allowed the person to give the customer the same price and perks they already receive. Would the customer not be just as happy? Would that not open up his schedule to work on himself and actually allow time to witness new opportunities for his business? Of course it would.
You see this is the recurring story no matter what the industry is. It’s the same story I went through as a personal trainer. I thought I was the best and that I couldn’t delegate certain aspects of the business. Read the Four Hour Work Week by Tim Ferris.
The reality is that everything can broken down to a process.
Even the best artists in the world have a creative “process” that can be deconstructed and taught to others while receiving the same result. Ai Weiwei, a world renown artist and activist that I admire does exactly this.
The focus should be on creating excellent systems for hiring, training, coaching and monitoring. It would allow him the freedom to take care of himself.
So if you can’t find time to exercise or even take a few days off, maybe it’s time you take a good look at the structure of what you do. Build up the courage to make a few changes to allow you the freedom you deserve.
