What Does Success Mean to You?

“If you think you’re successful now, you’re not” said the speaker.

I was invited to a seminar put on by the Ottawa Executive MBA program for the winners of the 40 under 40 business awards.

When I heard those words I stopped listening. I sat in my chair thinking about that for the rest of the talk.

How could someone make a statement like that without first defining success.

Success means different things for different people. Some entrepreneurs crave the adrenaline of the hustle, grinding it out to one day buy a football team.

That’s not success to me. To me it’s like hiking.

When I go hiking, the goal isn’t to race to the top and go home. If I do that i’ll miss all the sights and sounds. The goal of hiking is to enjoy the journey along the way and to do it as often as I can.

As I get older I think the definition of success for me has changed.

So perhaps it is even more complex than “Success means different things for different people”. Perhaps Success means different things for different people, and changes with time?

I think there are some constants in any thoughtful discussion about success, but generally your EMBA lecturer sounds like he thought he had the answer, when perhaps it was just his answer .. for now!

Love your stuff Jean-Luc … keep it up!
